MATCHING PAIR • Paul Adams has been restoring lorries since 1976, and now has a significant collection. This 1972 ERF LV is the latest addition and has received a stunning restoration. David Reed tells the story, and that of the close-coupled Abel trailer it's now matched with.

PD's archive • Transport enthusiasts, whether they are mad on lorries, buses or railways, all have one thing in common and that's an urge to collect pictures of their favourite vehicles. After all, without photographs life would be pretty boring. One would have to just picture things in one's mind – all very well, but it would be impossible to share such images with other enthusiasts. One of the great advances of the modern era is digital imaging. Taking pictures has never been so easy and, with modern cameras and even mobile phones you're pretty well guaranteed a good result instantly.

MAN AND SAVIEM • MAN of Germany and Saviem-Renault of France both launched onto the British lorry market in 1973. What's more, their products had been developed jointly and looked almost identical. Under the skin, however, there were many differences, as Peter Davies explains in the first episode of a two-part feature.

MASSIVE MATADOR • Clive Macdonald's distinctive 1953 AEC Matador was converted into a recovery vehicle by Southdown Motor Services in 1970. In preservation it has been owned not just once, but twice, by Clive Macdonald.

THOMAS ALLEN CARTAGE (AND TWO RON SMITHS) • Thomas Allen (Ltd.) celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1954. Many years later, a series of black and white photographs of vehicles, taken at about that time, was about to be thrown out, but fortunately were rescued by then Fleet Engineer, Ron Earnest Smith. Mike Neale went to meet his son, also Ron Smith, to view the photos and find out about his and his father's stories in the haulage industry and the history of Thomas Allen.
