""Gate to Kagoshima is an action-packed adventure that opens in Scotland and makes its way to Kagoshima, Japan, as our heroine flees the ghosts of relationships past only to find new loves―and new heartbreak. Set at the close of the Samurai era, the story blends Outlander by way of Before the Coffee Gets Cold.""—Marie Claire

""A terrific 'what if' time-travel novel with an intriguing historical element, epic battles, and a dash of romance.""—Adrian Cousins, author of The Jason Apsley series

In this exciting historical romantasy in the spirit of The Hurricane Wars and The Time Traveler's Wife—Outlander set in Japan—a young Scottish woman is magically transported to the last Samurai era, where she encounters ghosts from the past, her own Japanese ancestry, and a love that transcends time.

While in Japan researching her family's history, a vicious typhoon sends Isla Mackenzie 128 years back in time, to the dawn of the Satsuma Rebellion. There she meets her ancestors, and a charismatic samurai, Kei, with whom she unexpectedly finds romance.

But, unlike her Beloved, Isla knows about the looming Samurai rebellion—and Kai's fate. Should she attempt to change history or somehow make her way back to the life she'd had before?

Compulsively readable, historically grounded, and irresistibly immersive, Gate to Kagoshima is an unforgettable tale of duty, and of timeless love.

Kuroki (the Black Diamond series) launches a historical romantasy series with this addictive, high-concept epic that travels from the modern day to 1870s Japan. Isla Mackenzie heads from Scotland to Kagoshima, Japan, to research what became of her great-great-great-grandfather, Hisakichi Kuroki, whose story has been lost to time. While searching through shrine grounds on a stormy night in the city, she’s unexpectedly transported to 1877, the last days of the samurai. She soon meets samurai Keiichirō Maeda, and a doomed romance blossoms. Isla knows all too well that the samurai do not survive the bloody Satsuma Rebellion after their leader Saigō Takamori is killed. Now she must choose: return to her own time, stay with Keiichirō and die alongside him—or try to change the course of history. Isla’s foreknowledge keeps the stakes of the love story sky-high against the vivid, wonderfully detailed backdrop of feudal Japan. Readers won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough. In 2005, Isla Mackenzie travels from Scotland to Kagoshima, Japan, in search of information about her great-great-great-grandfather's family. Caught in a storm while searching the grounds of a shrine, she steps through a torii gate and is transported 128 years into the past. There, she meets samurai Keiichiro Maeda just as the Satsuma Rebellion is getting underway. As the uprising unfolds, Isla and Keiichiro grow closer, even as they become embroiled in the conflict. However, Isla is all too aware that, according to the historical record, the samurai will not survive. Should she return to the present or chance weathering the rebellion by Keiichiro's side? Narrator Siho Ellmore shines as she depicts Isla, who is not fluent in Japanese and feels out of place; Ellsmore's narration amplifies that sentiment. Ellsmore uses a Scottish accent for Isla's dialogue, while the rest of the narration features a different accent, emphasizing the dissonance Isla experiences. VERDICT Kuroki's ("Black Diamond" series) fantasy romance will appeal to fans of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. Listeners will relish being transported to Meiji Period Japan, where samurai make a final bid to resist Westernization.--Amber Owrey
