Featuring both the story of an historic, unforgettable win and insight into the life of an indelible champion, Choosing to Run is a truly inspirational memoir from Boston Marathon winner and Olympian Des Linden, sharing her personal story and what motivates her to keep showing up.

When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds. The weather didn’t bother her. In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day.
But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew by heart, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and remembered all of the reasons she loved to race.
Coming off Heartbreak Hill at Mile 22, Des took the lead and never relinquished it, becoming the 2018 Boston Marathon champion and the first American woman to win the race in thirty-three years.
Her career has always been defined by tenacity and an independent spirit, stretching back to her first competitive race in San Diego, when she beat better-outfitted, more experienced kids. Des was a two-time All-American at Arizona State University, and as her collegiate years wound down, she decided she wasn’t done with the sport. Des gambled on herself and moved to Michigan to give professional running a try. As she rose through the elite ranks, she became increasingly determined to do things her way in an industry often bound by the status quo.
In her first book, readers will learn the story behind that resolve: the way Des trains, the way she thinks, her relationships with other great runners of her generation, and how much she values her family and friends. They’ll read about her deep connection to the most famous marathon in the world, her two very different Olympic experiences, and how she defined new goals and set a world record at the 50-kilometer distance.

Most of all, they’ll learn what makes her get up and run every day.

A memoir by the winner of the 2018 Boston Marathon. In her revealing debut, Linden (b. 1983) chronicles her life and the circumstances that led to her unexpected win as well as how she became a two-time Olympian and the women's 50 kilometer world-record holder. From an early age in her hometown of San Diego, the author displayed an independent nature and desire to win despite feeling she didn't belong. "As soon as the gun went off," she writes, "fitting in no longer mattered. Breaking away from the crowd was the point, so I did." Linden knew that both of her parents were committed to her sporting career, but her father's demanding personality and "vicarious need for me to achieve" became a burden. After playing team sports, "running felt like independence," and she soon viewed it as a ticket to escape. Linden accepted a scholarship to Arizona State, where she was conditioned to accept extremes. Following graduation, she had no plans, but an unexpected opportunity renewed her commitment to running. At the age of 23, she took the "unusual" step of launching a marathon career. Throughout the book, Linden examines her relationships with her coaches, fellow athletes, agent, family, and friends, who pushed her to succeed. "Each success bought me time to keep doing what I was doing, but also raised the bar higher for what I needed to do next," she writes. However, due to various setbacks, winning the Boston Marathon continued to elude her. Linden also describes the "disorienting chaos" into which the sport was descending, caused by doping and other factors. At the starting line in 2018, she was facing illness and terrible weather conditions, making triumph unlikely. However, as she writes, things began to change around Mile 22: "My typical meticulous checklist was down to one item: survive." Athletes of all ranks will find Linden's memoir heartwarming and inspiring.

The Boston Marathon is famous for dueling finishes that produce defining moments. For Linden (then Davila), her moment seemed to be sealed during the 2011 Boston Marathon, when she dueled Caroline Kilel down the final straightaway in electrifying back-and-forth fashion, only to finish as the runner-up by two seconds. Linden, however, was determined not to let one race define her career. This gripping memoir, written with noted sports journalist Ford, chronicles Linden's journey to a new defining moment. The account traces her life from her early years in San Diego to earning All-American honors at Arizona State, and becoming a two-time Olympian. The revised edition of her career moment, however, needed to wait until the 2018 Boston Marathon--contested during a rain-soaked Nor'easter--when Linden became the first American woman to claim the title since 1985. Linden's strong convictions and high standards, especially regarding clean sport, are admirable, but she is also a well-balanced athlete--a voracious reader as well as a connoisseur of good coffee and fine bourbon. An inspiring memoir about navigating life choices both in youth and as an elite athlete.
