HEAT

Since its inception in 1996, HEAT has been renowned for its dedication to literary quality. Now, in the third series, HEAT brings together a selection of the most adventurous Australian and overseas writers. Each issue is committed to publishing innovative and imaginative poetry, prose, art and hybrid forms. HEAT’s contributors have included John Berger, Mary Jean Chan, Jenny Erpenbeck, Simryn Gill, Helen Garner, Evelyn Juers, Amitava Kumar, Deborah Levy, Gerald Murnane, Herta Müller, David Malouf, Hanne Ørstavik, Norman Erikson Pasaribu, Oscar Schwartz and Alexis Wright.

EVELYN JUERS NO PORTRAITS OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN • Evelyn Juers is a biographer, essayist and critic. The Dancer: A Biography for Philippa Cullen (2021) is her most recent book. ‘Baltic Blues. And Other Colours.’ (Sydney Review of Books) and ‘Totality in Wallal. Woolf in Yorkshire. Einstein in Scharbeutz.’ (HEAT Series 3 Number 11) are her most recent essays. She is writing a biography of Ralph Balson.

LUKE BEESLEY LIQUID AMBER • Luke Beesley lives and works on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung land (Naarm/Melbourne) and is a writer, artist and singer-songwriter. His most recent collection of poetry, In the Photograph, was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. Luke’s other books include Aqua Spinach (2018), Jam Sticky Vision (2015) and New Works on Paper (2013).

LUOYANG CHEN THREE POEMS • Luoyang Chen grew up in China and is currently based in Perth on the unceded Whadjuk Noongar Boodja. Luoyang is the author of two poetry collections – And the Waves (2026) and Flow (2023). His poetry was awarded second place in the 2026 Newcastle Poetry Prize.

JING CRAMB WEIMIN • Jing Cramb was born and raised in China and now lives in Meanjin, Australia. Her short stories have received a Highly Commended Award in the Peter Cowan Flash Fiction Competition, have been shortlisted for the Deborah Cass Prize, and longlisted for the Furphy Literary Award. Her unpublished short story collection, Clean, was Highly Commended for the 2026 Varuna Fellowship and was a finalist for the 2026 Queensland Literary Awards’ Manuscript Award for an Emerging Queensland Writer.

EMMA SORENSEN GILLIAN MEARS AND THE LOST ART OF LETTER WRITING • Emma Sorensen is a Sydney-based writer whose career has spanned book publishing, editing and journalism in Australia and the UK, alongside teaching communications at university level. Her non-fiction has appeared in Antipodes, Meanjin, Island and The Letter Review.

LUCY LEHMANN THIS IS OUR SCHOOL • Lucy Lehmann is a writer living on Wiradjuri land in Central West NSW. Her collection of short stories, Grassy Box Woodlands, will be published in 2027.

GABRIEL CURTIN SNAILS • Gabriel Curtin is an artist, writer and musician living on unceded Gadigal Country. He is a current PhD candidate at UNSW ADA where he teaches painting and theory. He is finishing a book called Calippo.
