Classic Truck

Going for the burn • Portrack Municipal waste incinerator was commissioned by ClevelandCounty Council in the mid 1970s. It was built next to Newport Bridge, close to the River Tees. The plant’s purpose was to receive and dispose of domestic and commercial wastes collected by Stockton on Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Langbaurgh councils. It also received commercial waste from contractors, Biffa and Cleanaway, writes Timothy Byrne.

Historic Foden Tipper sold • The inclement weather fails to dent sale prices.

SOUTH WALES AND WEST WALES BUSES IN THE EARLY 1960s

ARRIVA IN ESSEX AND KENT

DUPLE AFTER THE DOMINANT

Family Heirloom • The Seddon Atkinson Strato replaced the model 401 using a combination of British and Spanish technology. Adam Arrowsmith from Shropshire owns a fine example, writes Bob Weir.

SPRAT AND WINKLE RUN 2024 • What a difference a year makes. In 2023, the annual Sprat and Winkle run participants basked under baking sunshine but on Sunday 19 October 2024, the heavens opened, and Storm Ashley blew up the English Channel.

Re-light my fire - Part 2 • Here is the second part from Chris Newton as he looks at the various types of fire engines he has seen over the last few years while out and about, mainly at rallies.

Graham Thompson Victorian leyland salesman - part 2 • The Australian truck and bus retailing business has had its share of rogues and gentlemen over many decades. Graham Keith Thompson is definitely of the latter category, plus a man of loyalty and integrity.

Blackpool Tramway Service Fleet • The illuminations are in full swing and the Tower ballroom is the star of a popular Saturday night television dance programme; the crowds are flocking to the Lancashire coastal resort of Blackpool. Mike and Julie Blenkinsop investigate some of the vehicles that have been used to keep the seaside town and its tram system up to speed.

To the rescue • William Mitchell rescued these images from a Telephone Exchange back in the 1980s.

A marriage of convenience • In 1970, Seddon acquired one of its many rivals in Atkinson and rather than kill offthe name of its new purchase, it opted to merge the two into one and Seddon Atkinson was born, writes Pip Dunn.

Under the hammer • Many a classic truck is sold at auction, which sometimes sees them sold for ‘next to nothing’ or for ‘way over’ their value! When the Tip-ex show was held in Harrogate sometimes there was an auction with plenty of oldies looking for new owners…
