WILD RICE FOR THE WIN • This month we’re featuring a natural, homegrown superfood: wild rice. Also called manoomin in Anishinaabemowin, wild rice has been gathered and consumed by Indigenous people in North America for centuries, and it remains a part of Canada’s living culinary heritage, community and northern economy. Technically, wild rice isn’t a rice at all, it’s the seed of an aquatic grass that grows in shallow waters, small lakes and slow-flowing streams. Two species are commonly harvested in Canada, Zizania palustris and Zizania aquatica, the former growing predominantly in the Great Lakes and Prairie regions and the latter along the St. Lawrence River. Harvested in the fall, wild rice is traditionally served in stews and soups, but its nutty flavour also lends itself well to mixed grain dishes, breakfast cereals and salads.
