One person's treasure is another's trash. . .

Pepper Reece, owner of the Spice Shop in Seattle's Pike Place Market, wants nothing more than to live a quiet life for a change, running her shop and working with customers eager to spice up their cooking. But when she finds an envelope stuffed with cash in a ratty old wingback left on the curb, she sets out to track down the owner.

Pepper soon concludes that the chair and its stash may belong to young Talia Cook, new in town and nowhere to be seen. Boz Bosworth, an unemployed chef Pepper's tangled with in the past, shows up looking for the young woman, but Pepper refuses to help him search. When Boz is found floating in the Ship Canal, only a few blocks from Talia's apartment, free furniture no longer seems like such a bargain.

On the hunt for Talia, Pepper discovers a web of connections threatening to ensnare her best customer. The more she probes, the harder it gets to tell who's part of an unsavory scheme of corruption—and who might be the next victim.

Between her quest for an elusive herb, helping her parents remodel their new house, and setting up the Spice Shop's first cooking class, Pepper's got a full plate. Dogged by a sense of obligation to find the rightful owner of the hidden treasure, she keeps on showing up where she's not wanted, asking probing questions.

One mistake, and she could find herself cashing out. . .

Pepper Reece, owner of the Spice Shop in Seattle's Pike Place Market, finds a wingback chair on a curb. She's surprised to see a man run into an apartment building asking why Talia's possessions have been thrown out. She vaguely recognizes him, but she's more concerned about getting the chair home to reupholster it for her mother. It's the lumpiest chair she's ever seen, so she pulls off the seat, only to discover $35,000 inside. Pepper turns it over to the police, but she's worried about the previous owner, although she doesn't know who Talia is. When the man from the apartment shows up, she recognizes him as Boz Bosworth, a former chef who lost his restaurant. He asks Pepper to help him find Talia, but she refuses. Then, Boz's body is pulled from the Ship Canal, and Pepper becomes determined to find his killer and identify the missing Talia. VERDICT While money in a chair and a missing unknown woman are flimsy plot points, fans of the "Spice Shop" cozy mystery series will enjoy the return of favorite characters, and the spices, food, and flowers that are a treat for the senses.--Lesa Holstine

Pepper Reece, owner of the Spice Shop in Seattle's Pike Place Market (last seen in Between a Wok and a Dead Place, 2023), sees a wingback chair abandoned on the sidewalk and decides to rescue it and have it reupholstered. A man who looks familiar to Pepper protests, saying Talia, the chair's owner, wouldn't discard it. Pepper takes it anyway and discovers the lump in the cushion is an envelope containing $35,000. Pepper reports the money to the police, then tries to find Talia, who seems to have disappeared. Pepper realizes the familiar man is Boz Bosworth, a chef who stole a proprietary spice blend from her. Bosworth appeals to Pepper to help him find Talia. Refusing Bosworth's request to work together, but fearing something has happened to the young woman, Pepper intensifies her search, putting herself in danger. Rich in details of the Seattle area and the Pike Place Market and framed by facts about spices and cooking with them, this cozy, with recipes, will appeal to fans of Joanne Fluke, Ellie Alexander, Jenn McKinlay, and Krista Davis.
