Jack is a soldier, not a politician, and he realizes there are some battles he can't win—but he won't walk away from trying. The treachery of the alien Thraks have resulted in the death of his commanding officer and his unwanted promotion. New tactics from the enemy brings new peril, and traitors within the empire itself plot his ruin even as the sentience spawning inside his own armor threatens him.
