Follow Gertie MacIntyre from knitting circle to air stewardess in this glorious and romantic summer novel set in Scotland's windswept Northern isles, by beloved New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan.

In the northernmost reaches of Scotland, where a string of little islands in the North Sea stretches towards Norway, lives Gertie MacIntyre, a proud island girl by birth. Her social circle is small but tight: family and friends, particularly the women in her knitting circle. In the whitewashed cottages of their hometown, everyone knows everyone, and the ladies of the knitting circle know more than most. In a place of long dark winters and geographic isolation, the knitting circle is a precious source of gossip, home, laughter, and comfort for them all. And while she knits, Gertie's busily plotting what to do with the rest of her life.

When Gertie develops a crush on Callum Frost, who owns the local airline, she dares herself to take a job as an air stewardess on the little plane that serves the local islands. Terrifying at first, the sixteen-seat puddle jumper also offers the first taste of real freedom she's ever known. Will Gertie's future lie in the skies? Or will she need to go further afield to find the adventure she craves?

The latest from Colgan (The Summer Skies, 2023) is a sweet novel set on the rugged northern isles of Scotland. Gertie is shy and a bit of a daydreamer. Her mother and grandmother raised her with help from the local KC (knitting club). When local airline owner Callum Frost catches Gertie's eye, it ignites a desire to get a job working at the airline, despite never having been on an airplane herself. During this time she also expands her inner circle to include an old classmate, pilot Morag. Gertie and Morag even become flatmates when they rent an apartment from Gertie's first crush, Struan. When a freak winter storm puts local children in danger, Morag, her team, and Gertie are the first to offer help. After their heroic efforts, Gertie and Struan realize that not only is her old crush renewed but it is also reciprocated. Readers will get the closest look at Gertie's development as she comes out of her shell, but they will be delighted to meet many interesting characters along the way. Debbie Macomber fans won't want to put Close Knit down.

Carso, Scotland, is so close to the top of the world that the Arctic and Atlantic Sea are its northern border. At 30, Gertie Mooney is a lifelong resident with no plans to leave. She lives with her mother and grandmother in a small cottage, and that's okay because it's comforting to be surrounded by family and the Carso Knitting Circle women who meet there. But sometimes she thinks it would be nice to find a place of her own and maybe a little romance. When a temporary job working for a former classmate is offered, Gertie might just be on her way to all the things she's dreamed of. Readers looking for a small-town story that feels like the coziest hug from a hand-knit cashmere sweater will be thrilled with this book. The detailed descriptions of daily life in such a remote area of Scotland add to the complexity of the relationships as well as act as a good travelogue sales pitch to the beauty found there. VERDICT Full of charming and quirky characters, with thoughtful individual backstories, this could easily become the first in a beloved series. Great for fans of Viola Shipman and Maddie Dawson.--Stacey Hayman
