Grace Under Fire is an extraordinary, moving record of the importance of religion and spirituality to troops and their families from the American Revolution through the fighting in Iraq. Reflecting the writers' thoughts, feelings, and questions about matters of faith, this correspondence offers a fascinating window on how individuals have endured the trials of separation, the fear of battle, the agony of loss, and the stresses of homecoming.

How do men at war think about God and faith? Andrew Carroll collects 50 letters from the front throughout American history. Patrick Lawlor reads the letters, which share thoughts about both spirituality and wartime events, with an earnestness that puts listeners in the shoes of the soldiers. Lawlor gets the chance to relate upbeat stories as well as somber ones since the collection includes a couple of love stories. While the theme of faith in crisis is uppermost in the thoughts of most of the letter writers, glimpses of their lives come through as well. Lawlor's reading does honor to the words of his subjects, many long deceased. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
